Capturing ultrafine particles

The challenge

How can we measurably reduce exposure to ultra-fine particles from aircraft ground operations by piloting scalable, proven pre-treatment & capturing solutions at two leading international airports, so that we create safer, healthier environments without compromising operational performance?

Schiphol and Copenhagen Airports, together with the aviation industry, take measures to reduce exposure to ultra-fine particles generated during aircraft ground operations, as studies continue to explore their characteristics and possible implications for workplace environments, nearby communities, and the environment. At the same time, airports are thinking outside the box and exploring innovative ways to reduce emissions.

Although this challenge is rooted in aviation, comparable particle capture solutions are already used in other sectors, and we actively welcome proven technologies and approaches from outside the aviation industry. Therefore, Copenhagen Airports and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport are launching live pilots to demonstrate practical solutions that capture ultra-fine particles near aircraft ground operations. We seek deployable, scalable technologies that operate safely in active airside environments, integrate with existing infrastructure, and deliver measurable exposure reductions through pre-treatment and/or particle capturing technologies close to the source of emission with minimal disruption to airport operations.
