The Challenge
How might we autonomously secure an aircraft after it reaches the stand, as part of a seamless docking process?
We are open to:
- New approaches to securing aircraft wheels
- Adaptations of existing robotics or automation technologies
- Integrated hardware and software solutions
The solution does not need to replicate today’s wheel chocks — we are interested in different ways of achieving the same safe securing function.
Why This Matters
Autonomous securing is an important building block in KLM and Schiphol’s longer-term ambition for smart, connected and autonomous ramp operations.
The vision is a seamless inbound flow in which an arriving aircraft can move directly to stand, park without delay and complete the docking process with minimal human intervention.
Ultimately, KLM and Schiphol aim to enable aircraft to shut down their engines and APU within five minutes of parking, reduce waiting and emissions, and support faster turnarounds.

What We're Looking For
We are looking for solutions with the potential to work safely in a live airport environment and grow beyond pilot testing. Key considerations include:
Technical
- Autonomously and reliably secure the aircraft
- Demonstrate the key technical principles within six months
Operational
- Work within the space constraints of an aircraft stand
- Fit into time-critical apron operations
- Operate safely alongside existing airport processes, equipment and personnel
Integration & scale
- Connect to a broader autonomous docking process
- Have the potential to scale across aircraft stands and operations
- Offer a realistic path towards a cost-effective solution

What Happens Next
Selected companies will be invited to further engage with Schiphol through the Airport Innovation Runway program, with potential next steps including validation, pilot projects, and pathways toward procurement or co-development.
